“We want people to leave on the way home whistlin’ Dixie, man, whistlin’ the Hot 8, man, and remembering a good time. It’s all about puttin’ away the troubles and the pain that you go through and enjoying yourself.”
-Hot 8 Brass Band
The Hot 8 Brass Band is the real authentic deal, all ten members are from New Orleans, and they have an unmistakable jazz spirit and a significant story to their work. They recently appeared in Spike Lee’s poignant documentary about hurricane Katrina called ‘When the Levees Broke’. Hurricane Katrina in 2005 broke a lot of boundaries between generations and class divides. This is apparent in the sound of The Hot 8 who bring elements of modern, traditional and urban music together to create a unique, new class of brass music.
The Hot 8 Brass Band have perfected their sound in the streets of New Orleans, performing in second-line parades which are live music battles that take place on the streets where brass bands fight it out for the largest crowd listening to their music, the one with the biggest crowd at the end wins. However, the streets of New Orleans can also bring tragedy. Four of the members of The Hot 8 Brass Band have died, two from violent acts on the streets. These events have led the band to become part of anti-violence campaigns and to use their vibrant, energetic music to spread the message.
These trials and tribulations have helped the band fuel their passion and form a deeply relevant musical style. However, at its most basic, this Band is always the one to stop playing with the biggest crowd at the end.
