Press Release: The Kahilu Theatre’s 29th Season
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
More anticipated than shave ice on a hot day, yet just as colorful, the Kahilu Theatre Foundation is excited to share the release of its 29th season. And what a season it is! Twenty performances by individual and ensemble artists begin September 10, 2009 with Ana Laguna and Mikhail Baryshnikov performing “Three Solos and a Duet”. Baryshnikov is a true living legend, and the Kahilu Theatre can’t wait to share his talent with the Waimea community.
Then, it is off to the streets of New Orleans with the Hot 8 Brass Band on September 17! Their sound is an amalgam of modern, traditional, and urban music that creates a unique, new class of brass music. These guys are the real deal, all of them from New Orleans, and they are ready to bring the enthusiasm and fun of the streets of New Orleans right here to Waimea.
Dervish has been called the best band in Ireland, and on October 22 you will have the chance to decide this for yourself. More than just the music, the Dervish weave tales and draw the audience into their magic, leaving everyone with a taste of Ireland long after the show stops.
On November 5-8, the Kahilu Theatre is excited about the 8th annual `Ukulele and Slack Key Guitar Institute. This heartfelt weekend involves private lessons, a kanikapila, a talk story, a free Sunday concert, and two wonderful evenings of performances by the Institute’s artists. This year Friday’s concert is being headlined by Ledward Kaapana and Mike Kaawa, and Saturday’s concert is being headlined by Jake Shimabukuro. This Institute showcases some of the best talent around today on the Hawaiian music scene and offers plenty of opportunities for trading licks!
Because the Kahilu Theatre knew that the fans would be asking, there is one night on November 8th of just Jake Shimabukuro by himself. If you have heard Jake play, you know what a truly amazing artist he is.
Then the Kahilu Theatre is excited to bring The American Bluegrass Masters Tour to the theatre for one night on November 13. Grand Ole Opry legend Bobby Osbourne will be playing with the country’s hottest bluegrass singers and pickers in a concert of front porch twang and infectious rhythms.
Clowns and mayhem will overtake the Kahilu on November 19 and 20th with Aga Boom! Rooted in the unique European theatrical style and universal language of clowning, Aga-Boom cuts through the barriers of language and culture with the art of slapstick, the humor of physical comedy, and the delighted excitement of childhood.
The New Year begins on January 18 when the astounding choreography of the Mark Morris Dance Group will wash over the Kahilu stage. Mark Morris is one of the foundations that shaped American modern dance as we know it today. A rare chance to see dance of this caliber.
“From The Top”, NPR’s weekly hour long radio showcase of America’s top young classical musicians will be taping here at the Kahilu Theatre on January 20! This is a fun chance to take part in a live radio show and to hear some outstanding young classical talent.
Alpin Hong, known as the modern day pied piper, will bring his impressive skills to the stage on January 29. Opening the ears, eyes and imaginations of hundreds of thousands of Americans, his combination of stunning technique, emotional range, and rare humor will please all who get to see this concert.

Black Grace is returning with their energetic dancing on February 15. This all male dance troupe from New Zealand fuses Pacific and contemporary dance in a glorious celebration of movement.
Then the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio will be playing on February 20. For three decades the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio have dazzled audiences and critics alike and have set the standard for performance of the piano trio literature.
The Kahilu Theatre then welcomes back the Mariachi los Camperos de Nati Cano for two shows on February 27 and 28th. Traditionalist and visionary Nati Cano and his famed Los Camperos have both mirrored and shaped the history of mariachi music, performing with vibrancy and intensity for over 40 years.
On March 14 the Kahilu Theatre is thrilled to welcome a new talent on the music scene: Vienna Teng. Her haunting singing and beautiful piano accompaniments are fresh and hot and have critics calling her the next Joni Mitchell. This one is not to be missed.
The Makaha Sons will be playing on April 23. Their incomparable vocal arrangements and delightful stage presence filled with comical antics have won the hearts of thousands of fans worldwide.
Finally, it wouldn’t be a season finale without the Brothers Cazimero. Their latest cd, Destiny, topped out 3 on the Billboard World Chart. They will charm, sing, and hula their way into your hearts as they do every year.
