A Visual Journey to the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. Photographer and author Susan Middleton will take students on a visual journey to the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument which is the largest protected marine area in the world. She and collaborator David Liittschwager worked for two years on the islands, atolls, reefs and shoals of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands to create the National Geographic book and exhibition: Archipelago: Portraits of Life in the Most Remote Island Sanctuary. Susan's movie presentation will feature the flora and fauna, land and seascapes, and after she will answer questions and share experiences from her fieldwork in this vast, remote, and little known part of Hawai`i.

Music Masters from Japan

Featuring Masateru Ando with Tamaki Ando, koto, and Christopher Yohmei Blasdel, shakuhachi. Koto is the 13-string traditional zither-like instrument of Japan, and sounds somewhat like a harp; shakuhachi is the ethereal end-blown bamboo Japanese flute. Performed together, they represent the most characteristic and distinctive of the classic Japanese musical moods.

 

Shanghai Quartet

Hawaiian Starlight (CFHT Film)

Mauna Kea inspires a sense of awe. The film "Hawaiian Starlight" aims at sharing that magic through a multi-media experience: striking time-lapse cinematography scored with beautiful and engaging music. Intermixed within these clips are animated sequences of stunning images of the cosmos captured by the Canada France Hawaii Telescope. This movie will be narrated by an astronomer who will also be available for questions and answers.

A group of four talented Tuvans present Xoomei. Unusual in that distinct pitches emerge simultaneously from a single vocalist: a primary note, and high above it, a sequence of harmonies. It is considered one of the world's oldest forms of music.

Named after a deep and mysterious lake in the shadow of Errigal Mountain in Irish-speaking northwest Donegal, no traditional Irish band in the last decade has had more impact on audiences and fans than Altan, founded in the early eighties by Belfast flute-player Frankie Kennedy and Gweedore singer and fiddler, Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh.

Kahekili

A Hula Drama of Maui's Paramount Warrior Chief. One of Hawai'i's premier hula masters, kumu hula Hokulani Holt has created a masterpiece of Hawaiian dance and drama reawakening the slumbering story of Kahekili. Kahekili was made possible by the National Endowment for the Arts American Masterpiece: Dance initiative, administered by the New England Foundation for the Arts.

 

The Greatest Show Off Earth

This multimedia dance performance highlights themes of sustainability through changing perspectives using a circus vocabulary. Dancing ringmasters, clowns and trapeze artists will aid the audience in examining the various ways life is perceived and how perception impacts our behavior.
